Argentina Accommodation & Route

View S&M Boiler Works Accommodations in a larger map. Last updated: 24 November 2015

Costs are all based on two people. Potable water was often available at the locations in Argentina but we chose to filter our water anyways. Locations included secure motorcycle parking. The US$ conversions are based on our average exchange rate while in the country.

Notes: Expensive but the other hotel down the road was closed for renovations and we were too tired to keep looking. The rooms were heated with hot water, wifi, and cable TV. They have a gas pump here as well. They do exchange dollars but not at a good rate, only 12 per dollar when we got over 15 in Salta.

Notes: Breakfast is bread, jam, coffee/tea. This hostel offers better rates online specifically through hostalworld so we did make a reservation the day before for a twin room with shared bath (360 AR Pesos for two people) but they did not see or save a room for us so they gave us a matrimonial with bathroom but honored our reservation price. Very secure motorcycle parking that fits up to four medium size bikes (two Suzuki DR 650s and two KLR 650s). It had a very nice common area and friendly staff.

Dates stayed: 27 October 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Unknown but supposed to be hot
Electricity: Yes at each site but not all outlets were working
Internet: Yes but not working at our visit
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: This was good for a night. There are tables, benches, and grills at each site. And, most sites are partial grass rather than dirt. The bathrooms were clean. There was road and dog noise. If the campground was full then it would probably be very loud as there is not much room between the sites and there aren’t many toilets for how many people could be there. Mid-week it was just about empty. We were told the water was potable but we filtered anyway.

LAS LAJAS MUNICIPAL CAMPING – tent camping
Las Lajas, Argentina
AR - ACC - 11
GPS: -38.519910, -70.361350

Internet: Yes but best near reception as it doesn’t reach all sites
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: Each site has table/chairs and a grill. There are dishwashing sinks at the bathroom building. The bathrooms are clean and there is hot water in the sinks. We were here mid-week in spring and there was just one other camper. Not enough toilets if the site was full.

RIVER TRAFUL WILDCAMP – tent camping

Bathroom: No
Shower: No

Notes: Beautiful and secluded spot on the river with lots of firewood and there were trout in the river. This is perfect for tent camping, motorcycles, or small rigs. Fantastic views.

CAMPING PETUNIA – tent camping
Near Bariloche, Argentina
Website: http://www.campingpetunia.com
AR - ACC - 13
GPS: -41.096950, -71.448067

Dates stayed: 30 October – 3 November 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes at each site
Internet: Yes at the administration/reception building
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: The spots near the water (with views) are best and get the most sunlight. Season hadn’t started yet so the campsite was quiet except on Sunday when there were lots of people for picnics and the public access to the beach. If full season the sites are very close together and it would likely be loud. The bathrooms were reasonably clean and the showers had lots of hot water with good pressure and the bathroom sinks also had hot water. Each site had at table/benches and a grill. There is a laundry specific area for hand washing clothes and two areas for washing dishes. It is near to good ice cream and two larger grocery stores. About a 15-20 minute drive into Bariloche. Because there weren’t many people the internet speed was good.

QUILLA HUE CAMPSITE – tent camping
Near Villa La Angostura, Argentina
AR - ACC - 14
GPS: -40.745174, -71.667663
Cost: 100 AR pesos (US$6.58) for two people, one tent, and two motorcycles
Dates stayed: 4 November 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: No
Internet: No
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: The sites are very shaded and don’t get any morning sun so it was cold in the morning in early November. It had very nice views of the lake in some spots and had beach access. Hot water is available but you have to request it and they turn on the water heater. The toilets do not have toilet seats. The owners are very friendly. There is not a sign from the main road but the entrance is on the west of the bridge-like railings. Not many flat spots so probably difficult for big rigs. It was fine for a night. There is a large grocery store and gas station about a mile away.

CAMPING EL NIRIGUAO – tent camping
El Calafate, Argentina
AR - ACC - 15

Restaurant: At first glance this campsite seemed rough around the edges but it grew on us and we enjoyed it. There is an inside common area with tables, chairs, couch, and decent Wi-Fi. Almost all the sites have grills, electricity, picnic tables, and a light. The shower area is heated and there is an outside sink area for washing dishes and/or clothes. Easy walking distance to the center of town.

CAMPING HAIN – tent camping
Tolhuin, Lago Fagnano, Argentina
AR - ACC - 16

Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot (evenings as it is wood fire heated)

Restaurant: Yes, there is a small bar with food near the entrance and a kiosk
Notes: Great tent camping and the sites all have a fogon (a shelter and grill), wind shelter (like a teepee that you could put your tent in…ours was too big), picnic table, and bench. Roberto, the owner, is a great guy and very friendly and helpful. There is lake access with hiking trails in the nearby park. Mike caught rainbow trout in the lake as well.

PRIVATE CABIN
Ushuaia, Argentina
AR - ACC - 19

Notes: We rented a cabin for four nights with friends from Seattle. The cabin had two bedrooms and was rented through AirBNB. The cabin was US$90/night.

VIAL CAMPING – tent camping
Comandante Luis Piedrabuena, Argentina
AR - ACC - 20
GPS: -49.99446, -68.92175
Cost: 120 AR Pesos (US$8.90) per person per night for camping
Dates stayed: 8 December 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes at the reception area
Kitchen: Yes
Restaurant: No
Notes: There was a large price increase between the six months since someone had listed this location on iOverlander. We think that actually due to the just finished holiday long weekend that the owner threw out a price that was high because she didn’t necessarily want anyone camping. The price was high comparatively but as the wind was seriously howling and rain was about to start we didn’t have much choice but to stay. The tent camping area (and would fit small rigs) had excellent wind breaks (double/triple lines of trees) and there was a good kitchen area. The water in the bathrooms for the toilets was not working so I was given a bucket with water in order to flush the toilet in the morning. We also had problems connecting to the Wi-Fi but we didn’t work hard to try and sort it out.

RADA TILLY MUNICIPAL CAMPING – tent camping
Rada Tilly, Argentina
AR - ACC - 21
GPS: -45.91740, -67.55128
Cost: 40 AR Pesos (US$3.00) per person for camping
Dates stayed: 9 December 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes, by the administration building
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: We were not charged a fee for the motorcycles but there is likely a fee for rigs. The location is walking distance to the beach. It was a clean municipal campground and when we were there is was mostly empty. If full then the sites are close together and it would likely feel crowded. The spaces don’t have tables or benches but there are grills.

PUERTO MADRYN CAMPING ACA – tent camping
Puerto Madryn, Argentina
AR - ACC - 28
GPS: -42.78084, -64.99942
Cost: 100 AR Pesos (US$7.50) per person with motorcycle per night
Dates stayed: 10 December 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes, near the administration building
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: This is a very large campground and the prices are per person and per vehicle. The vehicle charge is a one time fee and the per person is daily so this is pricey if staying for one night. We don’t have the exact split. The showers had really good pressure and lots of hot water. It was a Thursday so the campground was mostly empty and very quiet. There are grill areas but not at the sites. There was also a small store that is open on the weekends and has some pre-made food.

POINT TEHUELCHE PARQUE VALDEZ – tent camping
Parque Valdez, Argentina
AR - ACC - 22

Dates stayed: 11-12 December 2015
Bathroom: No
Shower: No
Electricity: No
Internet: No
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: We drove the motorcycles onto the pebble beach for one night and on a hill the next night after driving around the peninsula. It was a lovely site and no one else was around.

CAMPING RIO COLORADO – tent camping
Rio Colorado, Argentina
AR - ACC - 23
GPS: -38.97712, -64.10917
Cost: Free (there was no one around to collect any money)
Dates stayed: 13 December 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm
Electricity: Yes at some sites
Internet: No
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: Yes
Notes: This is the municipal campground for Rio Colorado and it is right on the river. It was pretty dusty though we did find a small patch of grass and as it was Sunday there were lots of people there for the day (grilling, swimming, hanging out) and near one of the beaches there is a small snack shop and there was a DJ playing music (we couldn’t really hear it where the tent was). Due to all the people the bathrooms (the men’s room in particular) got pretty nasty. The ladies room stayed fine. We didn’t use the showers so not sure of actual temperature.

PICNIC AREA LAKE RIVADAVIA – tent camping
Trenque Lauquen, Argentina
AR - ACC - 24
GPS: -35.79278, -62.91370

Dates stayed: 14 December 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm (solar)
Electricity: No
Internet: No
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: This is a large picnic area and okay for camping along the lake. The owner chose not to charge us the small fee. The water in the bathroom is very salty so not even able to brush teeth with it. We didn’t try the shower. Each site has a grill and picnic table. The showers don’t have doors and the toilets don’t have seats. The bathrooms and entire site was very clean and there were some power outlets on poles throughout. The owner, Porky, was friendly.

SAN MARTIN PARQUE RECREATION MUNICIPAL – tent camping
San Martin, Argentina
AR - ACC - 25
GPS: -32.71048, -60.77397
Cost: 55 AR Pesos (US$4) for park entry, 40 AR Pesos (US$3) per tent, 25 AR Pesos (US$2) per motorcycle
Dates stayed: 15 December 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Unknown
Electricity: Yes at some sites
Internet: No
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: We are not clear which items were one-time charge and which would have been daily. This is a common method of charging in Argentina municipal campgrounds. There was a swimming pool though we didn’t use it. This is a large campground and seemed well maintained. There are a lot of day use areas along with the camping area. There was a large toilet block which was kept very clean but the other building with a couple showers was dark and we didn’t use the showers so not sure if hot water available.

EL EUCALIPTAL DE LA PAZ
