Colombia Accommodation and Route

View S&M Boiler Works Accommodations in a larger map. Last updated: 6 June 2015

Costs are all based on two people. Generally, potable water was not available so we filter our own. Locations included secure parking.

LUDWIG’S HOUSE
Cartagena, Colombia
CO-ACC-01
Website: House in Barrio AirBNB
GPS: 10.428020, -75.530030
Cost: 25USD per night without breakfast. There was three of us sharing (one double and one single bed) but the price is based on the room and not number of people.
Dates stayed: 17-25 April 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: Yes, shared with family
Restaurant: No
Notes: The studio room with bathroom can be rented through AirBNB. It has very secure motorcycle parking though the driveway is narrow so side bags likely need to be removed. It is also okay to do some motorcycle work at the house. The house is located in a typical barrio and is a great experience. There is a good common area, table outside the studio with large table for getting work done. The internet was fast.

SANS SOUCI – tent camping
Minca, Colombia
CO-ACC-02CO-ACC-03
GPS: 11.14450, -74.111450
Cost: 10,000 COL (4.25 USD) per person per night for tent camping.
Dates stayed: 26-28 April 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Cold
Electricity: Yes, in the common area
Internet: No
Kitchen: Yes
Restaurant: No
Notes: Good for tent and motorcycle camping though you set up the tent away from where the motorcycles are parked (hauling gear up a hill). They have dorms and cabins. This would not be great for people who sleep in their vehicles. There is a pool but it was not cleaned and looked slimy. The other negative is there was only one bathroom shared for the campers and backpackers staying in the hammocks and it wasn’t cleaned regularly. It was a nice walk into the town of Minca.

HOTEL BARILOCHE
Cucumania, Colombia
CO-ACC-04CO-ACC-05
GPS: 9.199497, -73.547403
Cost: 40,000 COL (16.50 USD) per night per room (double or single)
Dates stayed: 29 April 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: This was a great hotel as a mid-point stop with secure motorcycle (or vehicle) parking. The motorcycles were just outside our door. It was very clean and the air-con was a welcome relief from the heat.

EL PORTAL – tent camping
Rio Negra, Colombia
CO-ACC-06
Website: http://www.elportal.com.co
GPS: 7.33271, -73.16534
Cost: 30,000 COL (USD 12.50) per person per night
Dates stayed: 30 April – 1 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm
Electricity: No
Internet: Yes, weak signal
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: Yes with high prices
Notes: There is a large grassy area for tent or vehicle camping. It is a resort-style place though there are hikes in the area. They have swimming pools and natural pools. Do not visit Friday-Sunday as the place is a madhouse with people coming to enjoy the pools for a day. The restaurants are a bit pricey so bring your own food though there is not a clear area for washing dishes, etc.

LA PACHA HOSTEL & CAMPING – tent camping
Between San Gil and Barichara, Colombia
CO-ACC-07CO-ACC-08
Website: http://www.lapachahostel.com
GPS: 6.591472, -73.153747
Cost: 10,000 COL (4.25 USD) per person per night
Dates stayed: 2-3 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm solar shower
Electricity: Yes at the common areas
Internet: Yes at the common area (bus)
Kitchen: Yes
Restaurant: Yes
Notes: Secure parking for motorcycles and they also have rooms. It feels more like a home stay on a farm than camping at a hostel. The owners, Andrea and Justin, are excellent hosts. The food is great value for the money and tastes like home (familiar sandwich and pasta). We put our tent out in the forest area, which was quiet and peaceful. The GPS is slightly off (it is for the close to the house) so your GPS may not show you the road. Just after kilometer marker 75 the road will fork and just drive to the right. There are signs. There are campfires at night and a kitchen as well as an old bus that has been converted to a hang-out area including a TV with hard drive with lots of movies.

TINTO HOSTEL
Barichara, Colombia
CO-ACC-09

View from the bathroom!

View from the bathroom!

Website: http://www.tintohostel.com
GPS: 6.634095, -73.223141
Cost: 30,000 COL (12.75 USD) per person per night for a triple room with private bathroom
Dates stayed: 4-6 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: Yes
Restaurant: No
Notes: One of the most beautiful bathrooms with an excellent view. There is secure motorcycle parking and likely parking for one vehicle but I would email ahead of time about size. They have private and dorm rooms available. The shared kitchen (there are two) was beautiful and there are multiple areas to relax including next to the pool. All the bathrooms are impressive with local stonework. Email ahead for availability as it can get full. The manager speaks English. It is in the center of town so very convenient.

HOTEL RENECER COLOMBIAN HIGHLANDS – tent camping
Villa de Leyva, Colombia
CO-ACC-11
Website: http://colombianhighlands.com
GPS: 5.641230, -73.513210
Cost: 14,000 COL (5.75 USD) per person per night
Dates stayed: 7-9 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm
Electricity: Yes at common areas
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: Yes
Restaurant: Yes
Notes: This is a great location with about a 15-20 minute walk to the center of town (it is up hill on the return). If tent camping, there are three bathrooms and the one with the best hot water is next to the dorm room (not the one near the inside common area). Don’t set up your tent at the tent pad that is near to the kitchen, hang-out area as it gets loud at night. There are a few lovely places to relax or get work done both inside and outside. There is free coffee all day long. The internet could get really slow at times.

CRANKY CROC HOSTEL
Bogota, Colombia
Website: http://www.crankycroc.com
GPS: 4.600017, -74.069950
Cost: 100,000 COL for a triple room so 33,000 COL (13.50 USD) per person per night
Dates stayed: 10-14 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: Yes
Restaurant: Yes for breakfast
Notes: This hostel was incredibly clean and the shared bathrooms and showers have been beautifully remodeled. There is plentiful hot water for showers. It does get busy so it is recommended to email ahead for a reservation. At the time of our stay there was not free secure motorcycle parking (or other vehicle parking) available. The space they used to have is being remodeled. We parked next door (secure but no guarantee of availability) and it was 15,000 COL per 24-hour period (motorcycle was same price as vehicle). It is worth emailing and asking them if they can arrange/guarantee motorcycle parking as it was a very good hostel. We arranged our own parking on arrival and it was a bit stressful.

HOTEL MESON HONDANO
Honda, Colombia
CO-ACC-12CO-ACC-13
GPS: 5.210151, -74.736384
Cost: 120,000 COL for a triple and 90,000 COL for a double
Dates stayed: 15-16 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: Yes for breakfast and lunch (closes at 5pm)
Notes: The room was very clean and large with aircon and TV. There was a large and clean pool with hangout areas including tables, chairs, and hammocks. The restaurant is open until 5pm. It was a very easy walk to the church area where there are food stalls in the evening. It has secure parking for motorcycles and vehicles with night security guard. There is a grass field behind the hotel where you could pitch a tent or park an overland vehicle but we did not inquire or know if is permitted. It was a good halfway spot between Bogota and Medellin especially if you visit the Salt Cathedral on the way out of Bogota. The staff/owner are very friendly and helpful.

BUSTERS CAFÉ / COLOMBIAN EXPLORERS CLUB
Medellin, Colombia
CO-ACC-14
GPS: 6.207577, -75.565990
Cost: 25,000 COL (10.15 USD) per person per night for dorm
Dates stayed: 17-18 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: Yes
Notes: This location is in a process of a name change from Buster’s Café to Colombian Explorers Club. The dorm room was not clean. The motorcycles have to be on the street until the bar closes (at midnight during the week and 2am on Friday and Saturday) when you can bring them inside. Then they must be taken back outside by 8am before they open for breakfast. The pain in the ass of moving the bikes was not worth the central location as there are other options nearby.

HOTEL HOTEL / HOTEL DIANA
Jardin, Colombia
CO-ACC-15CO-ACC-16
Website: http://jardin.antioquia.in/alojamiento/hoteles/hotel-diana-1
GPS: 5.599992, -75.819399
Cost: 40,000 COL (16.30 USD) per night per double room
Dates stayed: 19-23 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: There is limited secure motorcycle parking (could also fit cars/vans) and the location is about a block off the main plaza. Our room (17) on the second floor was newly remodeled and was very comfortable. The internet router was also just outside so we had some of the fastest internet we have experienced since the US. It was very clean and the owners were friendly.

LA SERRANA HOSTEL – tent camping
Salento, Colombia
CO-ACC-17CO-ACC-18CO-ACC-19
Website: http://laserrana.com.co
GPS: 4.630067, -75.580967
Cost: 17,000 COL (13.85 USD) per person per night including breakfast
Dates stayed: 24-26 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes in common areas
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: Yes
Restaurant: Yes
Notes: Email or call ahead as they get full and sometimes turn away campers without a reservation. The location is beautiful (great views) and they have everything you need (internet, kitchen, etc). They are building a bathhouse for the campers that will have three toilets and three showers that will likely be done in another month or so. This will make the camping much better (currently all sharing a single shower and toilet). It is about a 20-minute walk into town.

TATACOA DESERT CAMPING AREA – tent camping
Tatacoa Desert, Villavieja, Colombia
CO-ACC-20
GPS: 3.233580, -75.168720
Cost: 5,000 COL (4.07 USD) per person per night
Dates stayed: 27-28 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Cold
Electricity: No
Internet: No
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: The view was incredible from camp! We were without water for 24-hours. It was eventually repaired but not until the morning. The family left without saying a word after the water ran out so we did have the place to ourselves. The first night (with water and family) the generator stayed on until 10:00pm. The security for tent and motorcycles camping we would rate low as many people come here and walk through the property to enjoy the view and the owner/manager was not around so not keeping an eye on anything.

CAMPING GAMCELAT – tent camping
San Agustin, Colombia
CO-ACC-21CO-ACC-22
Website: http://campingensanagustin.jimdo.com
GPS: 1.888160, -76.276910
Cost: 8,000 COL (6.52 USD) per night per person
Dates stayed: 29-31 May 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Cold
Electricity: Yes at common area
Internet: Yes
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: The owners are lovely and very friendly. They also have rooms/cabins. It is a large field and you can put up your tent anywhere and park the motorcycle right next to it. It was an easy walk into town and a 20-minute or so walk, up-hill to the San Agustin archaeological park. There are three toilets and three showers plus an outside shower. The electrical outlet is in the shared palapa area. In the rain the grassy filed can get slippery but not really muddy because of all the grass. They also have laundry service with washing machine (they did a great job on our nasty riding gear).

HOTEL SAN JERONIMO
Popayan, Colombia
CO-ACC-23CO-ACC-24
Website: http://www.hotelsanjeronimopopayan.com
GPS: 2.442550, -76.610232

Dates stayed: 1-3 June 2015
Bathroom: Running water

Kitchen: No
Restaurant: Yes, for breakfast
Notes: Very convenient and secure parking for motorcycles and vehicles up to 2.3 meters. Easy in and out of garage which is for hotel guests only. Wifi router on each floor. We have room 302, which was across from one (or very near) and so we had great speed. Clean. Hot water and TV with English channels. You must let the water run for up to five minutes until hot. It is close to the center.

HOSPEDAJE
Ipiales, Colombia
CO-ACC-25CO-ACC-26
GPS: .805650, -77.582241
Cost: 18,000 COL (8.15 USD) per night per double room downstairs
Dates stayed: 4 June 2015
Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Hot
Electricity: Yes
Internet: No
Kitchen: No
Restaurant: No
Notes: View to the Santurario De Las Lajas. Secure motorcycle and vehicle parking. The motorcycles were inside the building in an un-used congregation hall. Tricky to find and not signed at entrance. It looks menacing from outside but has a lovely courtyard garden on the inside. Rooms are small but relatively clean (some spider webs in corners) and lots of hot water in the sink and shower. No toilet seat. To find it: as you pull into the small road that leads to the Santurario De Las Lajas in front of you will be a pay parking lot, don’t go here. To your left is a thin, cobbled downhill road and there will likely be a chain across it. Chain is not locked and you are permitted to drop chain and drive down road just put the chain back. About 80-100 meters down the road turn left and drive past the ball court. This will seem weird but it is ok. The boarding house is a large white building with black bars on the windows. Drive through gate and park. To enter building ring bell to get service.
