India Route and Accommodation

View S&M Boiler Works Accommodations in a larger map. Last updated: 17 January 2017

Costs are all based on two people and two motorcycles. Locations included secure motorcycle parking. The US$ conversions are based on our average exchange rate while in the country. Overall our exchange rate was very poor because of the currency changes in India at the time we entered (they took out of circulation 1,000 and 500 rupee notes) and the whole Indian marketplace was in a bit of chaos. This meant that we didn’t use ATM machines but changed US dollars at the border (Nepal side) at an unfavorable rate. The second time we changed money was at a gold shop (again not at great rate) therefore our prices converted into dollars based on our exchange rate make things appear more expensive than they normally would be. Another resource for accommodation is iOverlander (http://www.ioverlander.com). We do share all our accommodation on iOverlander.

THUMPERS COVE

This doesn’t actually show how wonderful the view was.

Notes: This was a real splurge for us because it was recommended by a friend and the owner is a fellow biker. Both owners were very lovely people and we had an excellent time with them the three nights that we stayed; sitting by the fire well into the evening. The wifi was not working while we were there because some wires had just been accidently cut by the tree service.

The homestay and permits were arranged by Sange Tsering Thungon who is an avid motorcyclist as well as owns a travel company. We would highly recommend him. This was a highlight of our stay in India as Sange also showed us around his village.

Bathroom: Running water
Shower: Warm

Notes: The outside of the building looks tired but the inside was immaculate and we had an amazing view from our room. Plus, the sun heats the room all day so it was warm in the evening, which was a welcome change. It was a nice room, very clean, with a king size bed and lots of blankets. The restaurant had good food. There is secure parking in an underground garage with a gate. In the morning there was a discrepancy in the price as they change the price to 2,800 and we flat out refused to pay that because we had verbally agreed on 2,000 when we arrived (we had looked at another hotel nearby that was 2,500).

Notes: The price was negotiated down from 1,500 Rupee per night. A very clean and large room. We broke down near here and they didn’t mind Mike working on the bike next to the restaurant. You wouldn’t know this was a hotel – it is mainly a restaurant serving Thali plates but they have rooms upstairs. It isn’t advertised as a hotel but actually had very nice rooms.

Notes: We needed to keep pushing for a “simple” room rather than a deluxe at a higher price. It was very clean with a good restaurant. The water was lukewarm in the shower. Secure parking.

NO NAME HOTEL

Dates stayed: 14 December 2016
Bathroom: Running water with squat toilet
Shower: Cold
